Description
The Somerset Levels are a unique landscape where land and water keep shifting boundaries. I am always impressed by the wonderful and often eerie atmosphere in the Levels; but I also just enjoy the calm and serenity I feel when going for walks there.
I have often painted Level landscapes in different seasons using soft pastels. This one is a typical scene after heavy rains when most of the land is under water. It usually happens in late winter when the trees stand as sharp silhouettes and thus add a great visual and structural element to what would otherwise result in a painting of a somewhat flat and blurry landscape.
