Inspired by sea visits here in the South West of England, I’ve tried to capture the essence and experience whether walking along the coast, sailing, surfing, watching the waves crash or wild swimming. With this bold piece I used a limited colour palette inspired by a gorgeous tarnished copper pipe that my son gave me (see pic) left-over from his chemistry experiment – he used it as an ion donator for plating in case you wondered.
I started with black ink mark-making on the gessoed panel to create movement to respond to. I then enjoyed creating lots of collage papers using gelli plate printing followed by cutting up and piecing together fragments of the collage and newspaper and finally drawing over it. I love this process of adding and subtracting until a balanced composition is found.

With my background in design and with work on wood panel, I enjoy exploring the process of adding and subtracting until a balance of composition is found. I utilise various methods of adding texture, layering and piecing together fragments through mixed media and then scraping, sanding and peeling off to discover hidden gems and create a rich surface history.
