Description
From a reference photo by Paddy Rathbone, the elephants provided me with the inspiration to create this landscape drawing which evolved from a basic composition (no references, from imagination) of horizons and the tree; I especially wanted to try mists in the valleys and used a kneaded eraser to create the effect. I worked distant to foreground having plotted out in white and cold grey where the elephants would be.
Unframed, it is a relatively small A4 (297mm x 210mm) drawing on Polydraw 050 drafting film and I used only Faber Castell Polychromos pencils, including the sky. Despite the savannahs of Africa teeming with life, I wanted a feel of wilderness, vast expanse and solitude to an extent. A family group, doing their thing.
I hope you like it.
