The essence of Studland Bay in Dorset on canvas.
By: Julie Chadbourne
Description
In this acrylic textured painting, I tried to bring the essence of Studland Bay in Dorset to the canvas. Layers of acrylic paint dance across the canvas, creating a textured terrain that mimics the waves. Swirls of sandy beige and soft ocean turquoise blues intermingle, capturing the dynamic interplay of light and water.
In the background, a suggestion of the iconic Old Harry Rocks coastline emerges, echoing the distant horizon.
Placed within the composition is the red channel marker buoy, a recurring motif in my oceanic narratives. Its vivid red stands out against the more muted tones, symbolizing both guidance and a contrast to the natural palette of the seascape.
The texture of the painting invites touch, with raised layers that catch the light and cast shadows, enhancing the sense of depth and movement. Each stroke of the brush or palette knife tells a story of the sea’s constant motion and of waves meeting the shore.
Through abstraction, this artwork invites you to immerse yourself in the spirit of Studland Bay — to feel the breeze, hear the distant gulls, and witness the eternal dialogue between land, sea, and sky.
