Nanjizal Beach

Description

I’ve only been to Nanjizal Beach once; following a coastal circular walk from Lands End on the South West coastal path.

Nanjizal, also known as Mill Bay is called ‘Porth Nansusel’ in Cornish, according to Wikipedia; meaning “cove of the howling valley”, which sounds intense and dramatic, the perfect name to ignite the artistic imagination.

I’m not usually a fan of pebble beaches (though there is sand at one end), but there is something special about this beach with ‘Zawn Pyg’, romantically nicknamed ‘Song of the Sea’; part cave, part archway, cut into the side of the cliffs on the east side.

It’s one of those beaches where I kept seeing photos of the dramatic slit in the rock online and kept saying to myself, I must visit!

There isn’t a public car park or any facilities, so it’s usually quiet which adds to the unspoilt charm. It was a fairly cloudy day when we visited so I’ve used a bit of creative license in my painting; I was keen to capture the iconic cliff and pebbled beach, which in my head are the two first things I think of when I think Nanjizal.

I’m really pleased with this painting, the bright sunny blue colours complemented with the textures of the cliff and pebbles.
