I paint only in black and white acrylics on prepared mdf of various rectangular dimensions.
Painting in black and white gives me the opportunity of showing the everyday subjects which I paint in different ways, using contrast and shape in the composition, to promote the subject, rather than colour.
All my paintings represent a specific time and place and any people that may be in them are real and their posture and attitude are important to the whole painting.
I work in my 'studio' only from my own images, collected [over years] from across the UK and Europe. The only exceptions [so far] being from the 'family album', where I couldn't have taken the original photographs.
My love of black and white painting, which I have been doing for more than 30 years, stems from my love of black and white photography. I love the idea that photography, having started in black and white and 'progressed' to colour. So painting having started in colour should progress to black and white.
