Lydia Carter

Lydia Carter is an 18 year old Painter/Sculptor based in Somerset and is one of the youngest artists exhibiting work through Art Gallery SW. Having completed an Arts Foundation (Distinction) at Strode College, she is progressing onto a fine art degree (BA Painting) at Edinburgh College of Art.

Her work is primarily figurative, but inspired by the countryside and wildlife around her, she often combines elements of nature into her pieces. In recent years Lydia has been exploring themes of light and shade; the beauty within us; anatomy; mortality and commemoration; and the Gothic tradition. She works in a range of media including pencil and watercolour, but in the past two years since starting to use oils, has found a passion for the medium and last summer contributed to Somerset Art Week with a large oil painting reflecting on the struggles of growing up in a rural area. She has also had work exhibited in both The Black Swan, Frome, and The Whitworth Gallery, Manchester.

Lydia regularly takes on varied commissions in the UK and internationally, including the illustrations for a, now published, children's book and artwork for folk musicians. The smallest size paintings undertaken as commissions are 10cm x 10cm, following on from her 'commemoration' series of precious objects.
