Louise Kelly

I studied illustration at the Royal College of Art and I was fortunate to have a successful career in this field; I also taught Art and Design in London for 30 years. After a recent move from London, I now work from my home studio in Devon. I primarily draw inspiration from the surrounding countryside and the nearby Jurassic coast. My background in illustration still informs my work to present and gives my paintings a narrative slant. Whereas I previously had to escape London to try and find scenic inspiration, I now find it on my doorstep, and the compelling and diverse landscapes and seascapes that surround me never cease to keep me constantly energised, excited, and animated. Observation is integral to my work; I like to use sketchbooks to collate ideas and inspire both my compositions and use of colour. I find painting a necessity and I have a natural curiosity for creating pictures that evoke a sense of place or, sometimes, disquiet.
