Colin Harrow

I don't like to be pigeon-holed as a painter but try to capture unique images using oils, watercolours or the occasional photograph. I paint portraits, landscapes (rural & urban), still-life, wild-life  and everything in between.  The best compliment I get is when people familiar with my work say they don't know what to expect next.  I sometimes try  to capture an intimate part of a subject believing detail often conveys more of its unique character. These paintings often have an almost abstract quality.     Many have stories to tell and I enjoy sharing them - which may be not be unconnected to my working life as a journalist. Largely self-taught I received an Open College of the Arts Certificate and Award in 2003. I'm a member of Somerset Art Weeks (SAW) and take part in their Open Studio events. In recent years I have exhibited at the Bath Art Fair and had solo exhibitions at Minehead, The Princess Theatre at Burnham- on-sea and the Heritage Centre, Dulverton.  On three occasions my work has been chosen as a finalist in national competitions and the original of one painting -  tins of shoe polish -  went on show at the Bankside Gallery next to Tate Modern and was bought by a gallery in Milan. My work has been shown at the Royal Birmingham Society of Arts Gallery and galleries in Cumbria and Greenwich. My own favourite artists include Americans Edward Hopper (“Nighthawks”), the social realist “Ashcan School”, particularly George Bellows, Andrew Wyeth, a very much under-rated, at least in Europe, painter and Norman Rockwell who was far more than just an illustrator for the “Saturday Evening Post and whose work contains a wealth of social commentary. My favourite British painter is Lucian Freud. My favourite art quote is from Paul Klee who described drawing as “taking a line for a walk.”
