The quay as it was in the 19th century with a couple of topsail schooners under the light of a full moon with some gaslight adding to the atmosphere. Although still instantly recognisable today this accurate depiction demonstrates an era when the port of Exeter traded with much of the world. I find this area and its history fascinating and have painted it numerous times. I was at art college in Exeter at the time the Onedin Line was being filmed on the quay and spent a lot of enjoyable time there then.
