Created as part of my new body of work started at the beginning of lockdown March 2020, which has helped me make sense of the shifts going on around the world and reflect on what is meaningful in life.
Using various methods of layering, piecing together fragments through mixed media and scraping, sanding and peeling off – metaphorically delving deeper to discover what lies beneath and our own hidden strengths. I have also added fossil transfers and tapped into my love for the unique textures that occur on weathered walls, old billboards and rusting metal, showing the scars of time. Exploring the process of adding and subtracting – painting layers, mark-making and glueing pieces on and then gouging and scraping off until a balance is found.
Ready to hang in an off-white, hand-painted tray frame.

I have always had a deep affinity with the natural world and draw inspiration from the textures, colour, patterns and atmosphere experienced whilst exploring the surrounding countryside and nearby Jurassic coast. This tranquil piece forms part of a small series and the abstract nature allows the viewer their own imagination and interpretation.
So often we have to hold it together, grit teeth, keep calm and carry on. This painting reminds me of the contained chaos we have to hold at times and of what really goes on under the calm surface. Created during the pandemic with built up layers on panel – shapes, colours and textures inspired by the exquisite surrounding landscape here in Devon, UK. I love the raw, expressionistic feel of this piece. Part of an ongoing series looking at ways we cope with stress and trauma and how it manifests in our mind and body.

Created as the UK emerged from the pandemic lock-down, I loved working on this colourful piece! It forms part of an ongoing series looking at how we process and make sense of the jumble of information that we soak up during challenging times – the facts and figures from the media and all kinds of opinions from social media and the resulting emotions. It is a challenge to make sense of the madness at times. I tried not to take myself too seriously – here choosing to express some of the quirky beauty that nature and life has to offer.

It forms part of an ongoing series looking at how we process and make sense of the jumble of information that we soak up during challenging times – the facts and figures from the media and all kinds of opinions from social media and the resulting emotions.
