Inspired by coastal visits here in the SW of England, this abstract seascape is an interpretation of the calmer weather days at the coast – reflections on the sand, sea spray and mist rising with a suggestion of a mast – perhaps metaphoric of the voyages we take in this lifetime.

Inspired by sea visits here in the South West of England, I’ve tried to capture the essence and experience whether walking along the coast, sailing, surfing, watching the waves crash or wild swimming. This painting will bring the essence of the sea and hopefully a metaphoric breath of fresh sea air to any home.

Another vibrant abstract piece inspired by coast and countryside walks here in the South West of England. Devon is a far cry from the wilds of my African roots. I draw inspiration from the untamed, exquisite landscape surrounding me here – the vastness of Dartmoor, the energetic rivers, wildflowers and the Jurassic coastline with its history and crumbling cliffs.
I create a rich surface texture by building up layers then scraping, sanding and drawing back into these until a balance in composition is found.

Layers upon layers create a wonderfully rich surface in this painting and I love the hints of colour peeking through where I have sanded. A figure emerges and it seems symbolic to me about what we as women carry and hold in this lifetime, the pieces of us and the beauty in the scars of time. The roles we embody as daughters, sisters, mothers, friends, wives, grandmothers etc and the messages we’re told by others including the media on what it is to be a women and how we rework this in being our true selves.

Such a pleasure creating this piece – lots of experimenting and play whilst responding to the flowers – tuning into the essence and character of each, adding collage chunks, scratching through and drawing over to add movement.

Inspired by the all-encompassing colour, beauty, character and aroma of flowers. I aimed to capture the essence and emotion experienced – like an exquisite symphony with shape, line, colour and marks the visual notes encapsulated. Built up acrylic and ink layers were worked into with various mark-making tools to create a rich surface history – a process of addition and subtraction until a balanced composition was found.

An abstract ensemble inspired by countryside and coastal walks here in the South West of England. I love the fact that people have seen so many different things in these paintings – cliffs, a river, flowers, fossilised rocks and dunes – what can you see?
I enjoyed the process of adding and subtracting until a balance was found in the composition. I utilised various methods of layering and piecing together fragments through mixed media and then scraping, sanding and peeling off – metaphorically delving deeper to discover hidden gems.

Created as part of my new body of work started at the beginning of lockdown March 2020, which has helped me make sense of the shifts going on around the world and reflect on what is meaningful in life.
Using various methods of layering, piecing together fragments through mixed media and scraping, sanding and peeling off – metaphorically delving deeper to discover what lies beneath and our own hidden strengths. I have also added fossil transfers and tapped into my love for the unique textures that occur on weathered walls, old billboards and rusting metal, showing the scars of time. Exploring the process of adding and subtracting – painting layers, mark-making and glueing pieces on and then gouging and scraping off until a balance is found.
Ready to hang in an off-white, hand-painted tray frame.
Acrylic and Mixed Media on Wood Panel
13.5″ x 13.5″ (including frame)
I have always had a deep affinity with the natural world and draw inspiration from the textures, colour, patterns and atmosphere experienced whilst exploring the surrounding countryside and nearby Jurassic coast. This tranquil piece forms part of a small series and the abstract nature allows the viewer their own imagination and interpretation.
Created as the UK emerged from the pandemic lock-down, I loved working on this colourful piece! It forms part of an ongoing series looking at how we process and make sense of the jumble of information that we soak up during challenging times – the facts and figures from the media and all kinds of opinions from social media and the resulting emotions. It is a challenge to make sense of the madness at times. I tried not to take myself too seriously – here choosing to express some of the quirky beauty that nature and life has to offer.
